These extraordinary pastiches, drawn from propaganda magazines such as Soviet Union and China Reconstructs, initially amuse and intrigue. The questions come later. Who are these people? What transfixes them? Just out of frame, setting mother and child in their allotted places, someone is directing this little scene. But who? The whole scene, radiant with the reflected glory of the passing Leader, is an exercise in plastic ecstasy. It speaks false hopes, from the ruthlessly foregrounded artificial flowers to the mass-produced rosettes at the back.
